DRDC to Present Biometrics for Defense & Security at 2008 Government Technologies
Conference and Expo

March 24, 2008 - Toronto, Canada - Len Goodman from the DRDC Centre for Security
Science will be delivering a keynote presentation on Biometrics for Defence &
Security: Coordinating a Horizontal Government Approach to Science & Technology at
the 2008 Government Technologies Conference and Expo. Now in its fifth year, this
is Canada\'s leading IT event and it will be hosted April 15 -16, 2008 at the Design
Exchange to Toronto Ontario.

Len Goodman is Portfolio Manager, Surveillance, Intelligence & Interdiction, Public
Security Technical Program, DRDC Centre for Security Science.

The Centre for Security Sciences is housed within Defence R&D Canada (DRDC), an
agency within the Department of National Defence, serving the Canadian Forces S&T
requirements.

The recent introduction of the Public Security Technical Program (PSTP), further
broadens the S&T leadership mandate into areas of: all-hazards risk analysis,
capability engineering, protection of critical infrastructures, enabling
interoperability of technologies, integrating voice and data communications,
enhancing transportation and border security, ensuring psychosocial and community
resiliency/preparedness, and surveillance, intelligence and interdiction, First
Responder safety, and ensuring realistic standardization for emergency management
practices. One of the key technology foci for the PSTP program is biometrics for
identity verification and access management. Current and future biometrics
technologies range from palm/fingerprints, hand vein patterns, and iris scans,
through to a fusion of non-invasive/transparent physiological indices, instant DNA
capture, and gait/voice/face analysis. Many challenges remain before widespread
employment of biometrics can be achieved in border, transport and critical
infrastructure security domains remain however. These include issues of reliability,
speed/convenience, privacy, database interoperability, compatibility, technology
leakage, and spoofing.
